Crocworld Conservation Centre and Izinyoni Nursery ready for busy festive season
Amazingly, it’s that time of year again- and as November draws to a close, Crocworld Conservation Centre and Izinyoni Nursery are gearing up for one of their busiest festive seasons yet. Last December, the Centre welcomed over 11,300 guests through its doors- a fact that proves beyond a doubt that this South Coast venue is the place to become summertime. It’s the perfect choice for visitors of all ages; from families looking for ways to entertain their children over the school holidays, to pensioners looking to soak up the sun in a relaxing outdoor environment. Crocworld Conservation Centre really does have something for everyone- from its exciting animal displays, to its beautifully sculpted indigenous gardens, to the delicious menu and spectacular sea views boasted by its restaurant, Le Rendezvous. This year, the venue is expecting to welcome more visitors then ever- especially because its onsite nursery has transformed into a real attraction for all gardening enthusiasts since opening its doors for the first time last December. The Izinyoni Nursery specialises in indigenous plants and trees, and its expert staff are more than happy to give visitors all the tips they need to get their garden looking beautiful for the holidays.
In fact, Crocworld Conservation Centre is full of seasonal goodwill at the moment- with staff planning special events and updated animal demonstrations in order to ensure that guests get the very most out of their holiday experience at the Centre. On December 16th, visitors are invited to join in the celebrations for the 114th birthday of the Centre’s most famous resident: Henry the much-loved Nile crocodile. Born in 1900, Henry is the oldest known crocodile in captivity, and began life as the terror of a Botswanan tribe in the Okavango Delta. An elephant hunter named Sir Henry was hired to capture the crocodile, Henry was sentenced by the tribe elders to a lifetime of captivity as punishment. These days, however, Henry has a pretty wonderful life at the Centre with his six wives, and this year his record-breaking birthday will be celebrated with balloons and cake for all of his well-wishers on the big day. You’d better hurry though- as these birthday treats will only be available for as long as stocks last!
During the holidays, guests will be to take a ringside seat for crocodile feeding time, which will take place at 11am and 3pm every day and will be accompanied by a brief talk about the habits and behaviours of the crocodiles housed at the Centre. This is a fantastic opportunity to see apex predators in action- and all in perfect safety from behind the enclosure fence! Those that choose to visit Crocworld this summer will see that there is more to the Centre than its crocodiles, however. The venue is also home to a fantastic array of venomous and non-venomous snakes, and aviaries full of regional and exotic bird species. From December 15th, guests will be able to attend a snake presentation every day in the snake tunnel at 10:15am.
Best of all, those savvy Christmas shoppers will be able to combine a trip to Crocworld Conservation Centre with the opportunity to cross a few more gifts off their list. The Centre has a large and varied gift shop, offering everything from exquisite clothing to curios, toys, jewellery, books and ornaments. Alternatively, those green-fingered friends or family members will no doubt be thrilled with a gift from Izinyoni Nursery, which stocks an extensive range of beautiful and unique indigenous plants and gardening paraphernalia. For those indecisive gift-buyers, Crocworld Conservation Centre has the perfect solution in the form of gift vouchers. These vouchers are available for purchase from the Centre’s reception area, and can be redeemed either in the main gift shop, or at Izinyoni Nursery. For those that like to take a back seat when it comes to Christmas shopping, don’t worry- weary legs and empty stomachs can easily be resolved with a scrumptious lunch at Le Rendezvous whilst you’re waiting for your friends or family to finish up.
Crocworld Conservation Centre will be open throughout the festive season from 8am- 5pm, with the sole exception of Christmas Day itself. Tickets are priced at R60 per adult, R40 per child, and R45 per pensioner. Discounted prices apply for school tours and tour groups- please visit www.crocworld.co.za for more information. Izinyoni Nursery is based at the entrance to the Crocworld Conservation Centre and caters to wholesale and single item buyers alike. It is open to all members of the public from 08h00 to 16h30 daily Monday to Sunday, while the Izinyoni Bulk Sales Nursery is open from 08h00 to 13h00 daily from Monday to Saturday.
